Ugeek: Online Technology Resource - Dyno Don

Dyno Don found Ugeek. He says: "As the name implies, a "geek" site that pretty much covers it all. I found all kinds of neat stuff, from PDA's (still doing research!) to reviews, to genuine geek stuff like (who me?) overclocking info. Nice format, nice layout."

Wine Country Larry said "Looks like a 'keeper' to me! I haven't had time to dig very deep yet but I did examine the add a new HD section and everything they say looks kosher to me! I want to look deeper into the section on over clocking to see if the proper cautions are there! I just hate it when some people/sites imply that over clocking is no big deal and that you need not worry about possible consequences."

The site's "mascot" is a little smiley face sporting a propeller beanie. That's no geek. He needs a pocket protector.

The site clearly supports a wide range of folks - beginners to more knowledgeable folks. You can post a question, and check back for answers. People helping other people. In general, the advice looks pretty good.

Worth a visit, either to share your knowledge or get some.

Thanks, Don!

Entertainment Sleuth: Celebrity News Search - Wine Country Larry

Wine Country Larry (LarryL in the chat) says "Here is an interesting site if you are interested in keeping up with the news on 10 or less celebrities. It is a part of the 'Sleuth' series of sites, 'Job Sleuth' 'Entertainment Sleuth' and etc. If you register, it's free, you can enter a drawing for a free Visor PDA too."

I checked out the search - it did very well at getting hits on my celebrity in the news.

The emails you get are ok - big headers and footers, but good at the information you need.

If you want to know what's up with your favorite TV or Movie stars, this is a great place. Worth a visit.

Thanks, Larry!

Who's Alive and Who's Dead - Dudley

Dudley says: "Here's one that could save some arguments. It's called "Who's Alive and Who's Dead". I perused several of the categories, particularly the Political list and learned a few things about who is still around, or when they left us."

This is a question that pops up on occasion. This site holds 1,697 entries.

There's categories - actors and actresses, musical performers, political figures, sports figures, etc.

Doing the browse, I found several that surprised me - people dead I hadn't heard about, and people living I haven't heard about in years.

Interesting and different, Dudley! Thanks!

Vcall Investor Broadcasts - Solinas

This is a MUST BOOKMARK site for the investor.

The company I work for when I'm not wandering the web announced their financials this week. Typically this is done with a conference call to their analysts. This time it was different - the call was also broadcast over the web, using real audio. Vcall hosts these sites.

Many companies are starting to do this. You can get the financials, business outlook, and most interestingly - hear the question and answer session that usually concludes the call.

If you're into stocks, bookmark this one!

Selectsmart: American Presidential Candidate Selector - Tanvir

My coworker Tanvir sent me this one.

Getting a clear idea of how your personal views compare with the announced position of candidates (who knows what they REALLY think, anyway?) can be difficult. You'll here a bit here and a bit there, but with so many candidates, and so few issues discussed, you can't get a good view of their position.

This site is a great one. You enter your own preferences and beliefs, and see how the candidates compare with what you want.

Of course, you'd never trust your vote to some web script which spit out a result, but it is a GREAT first step in narrowing the field to a few you'd like to look into more.

Great site! Thanks, Tanvir!

Free For All!

"Free For All" picks are hot, FREE items or services. It can be software, online services, you name it - but it's got to be free, with no strings attached.

PrintFolder: File and folder printer - Taxi Mike

Taxi Mike says: "Every now and then callers will ask BobOD about disk cataloguing utilities. Well, here's a free one I just gleaned from the Insider newsletter. Once installed, you can right-click a folder and select "print folder" from the context menu. There's an option that will allow you to include subdirectories. Enough description, check it out. I give it a big KewL."

From the site: "Handy utility to print or save a list of files located in any folder. Right-click any folder in Windows Explorer and select "PrintFolder" in the popup menu.".

This sounds like one of those utilities which you could live without, but once you have 'em, you rely on them.

HotBar: Change IE Toolbar - Kenny

Kenny says: "This is a really neat one. It's a freeware application that will yet you change your internet explorer toolbar background to thousands of images in their library or use your owner."

When you go to the site, they try to get you to install right away. If you just want to browse before you install, then click "More Info".

Personally, I like SKINS a lot! It keeps my limited attention span from getting bored with software. Change the look, and it's new again. HotBar is skins for your Internet Explorer.

This is very cool! After installing the software, I clicked on an image I like, and after 30 seconds or so it was installed as the background of my Internet Explorer toolbar. Very nice.

If you see one you know a friend would like, it's easy to send it to them as an Ecard.

I like this a lot! Thanks, Kenny!
