Tribute in Light - Andantino

Andantino suggested I do a Google image search for "Tribute in Light". I did. Wow - really amazing photos.

From the Wikipedia article: "The Tribute in Light was a temporary art installation of 88 searchlights placed next to the site of the World Trade Center from March 11 to April 14, 2002 to create two vertical columns of light in remembrance of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The tribute was launched again in 2003, to mark the second anniversary of the attack, and is done every year since on September 11, to mark the anniversary."

I looked at bunches of pages, and thought this gallery contained the most breathtaking images.

Check 'em out. Thanks, Andantino!

Tribute in Light on Panoramas.Dk - Solinas

Panoramas.dk is the site that does amazing 360 degree panoramas in Quicktime. It's like you are there, and can turn around in place to look all around you.

This page houses 2 Tribute In Light panoramas.

Tribute in Light on Wikipedia - Solinas

This is a link to the Wikipedia entry. It's got a lot of good information, and related links.

Microsoft Video Part 1 - Santa Rosa Steve

Santa Rosa Steve says: "Someone at Microsoft let a pair of videos -- created by Microsoft in 2004 for in-house training -- get onto the 'Net. The two 20-minute videos star Ricky Gervais, the clueless boss from the UK-based "The Office" TV series. The videos were on YouTube for a while, but were removed; for the time being, you can watch them on Google Video."

Very cool - thanks, Steve!

Microsoft Video Part 2 - Santa Rosa Steve

The second of 2 Microsoft Videos.

Wine Searcher - Santa Rosa Steve

Santa Rosa Steve found Wine Searcher.

From the site: "Wine-Searcher's daily updated database of 7800 wine merchants' price lists saves you money when buying wines. The site provides the fastest and easiest way to find who is selling a wine, to compare prices between wine stores, and to value wines.

"Free" searches are often restricted to wines from merchants who sponsor us (around 200 retailers). The subscription "Pro Version" provides full price comparisons between all price lists. Accessing this extra range and the additional services available within the Pro Version costs $29.95 (USD) per year."

Besides just searching for something you're looking for, there's also:

If you're into wine, you'll probably want to subscribe. Anyway - check it out.

Thanks, Steve!

Textbook Revolution - Ron in San Bruno

Ron in San Bruno says: "This one is particularly interesting if you looking for various college level textbooks for self study, but don't want to spend a fortune."

"I checked the section on mathematics books and found it to be very extensive. By following links, I ended up finding a dozen new computer algebra programs."

Textbook Revolution--taking the bite out of books

Textbook Revolution is the web's source for free educational material. It is run by students fed up with the high price of college textbooks (listing a few hundred books on-line in a dozen fields), but contains much more.

The (mostly technical) books range from self published works, e-books, etc. to scans of recently out of print books. There are also links to other collections of on-line books and in most cases complete reviews of books or collections are also presented.

A 'Links' section points to a number of additional sources of knowledge on the web that are legitimate, but not actually books. But if you find yourself stuck and actually have to buy a book, there are links for the places with the best prices.

Open course ware is extensively documented going beyond the 1100 courses available from MIT.

Overall 'Textbook Revolution' is a useful tool for finding educational material of high quality on the web."

Very cool - thanks, Ron!

Disney Comic Strip Artist's Guide - Solinas/Retrothing

From RetroThing: "Carson Van Osten is a well known Disney illustrator who inked countless Disney comic books. In the mid 1970s he put together a brilliant panelized how-to guide that encapsulates years of hard-won cartooning knowledge on seven witty pages. After circulating around Disney, it became a runaway underground classic."

"Carson recently stumbled across a grainy scanned Xerox of his handout on Mark Kennedy's Temple of the Seven Golden Camels site. Inspired by the positive comments, he forwarded an original copy of the handout to Mark, who posted beautiful high-resolution scans for everyone to enjoy."

These are very cool if you are a cartoonist, an artist, or just enjoy Disney cartoons.

You can check out the 7 pages as images, or read further down in the comments to find a link someone put up who had turned the pages into a single PDF file.

I like this site. The webmaster gives great freeware links, but also cool related stuff. For example, you can download Firefox with a link, but he also has:

This webmaster obviously enjoys doing this, and it shows. His software selection is excellent.

I'll be browsing this one!

Thanks, Dan!
