The Links for August 3, 1996

Dictionary.com
If you're like me, you have a 1984 vintage dictionary and a paperback copy of Roget's Thesaurus from your high school days. When you bought your CDROM, you replaced the dictionary, but haven't updated it since.

Dictionary.com is more than a dictionary - choose from Webster, Roget's Thesaurus, Bartlett's Quotations, Strunk's Elements of Style, The New Hacker's Dictionary, and several others. The interface is fantastic - use Webster to look up a word - you'll have a place to click to seamlessly use the thesaurus, etc. A must-use site for students, and non-students alike.

Seattle FilmWorks
I'll only feature commercial sites if they are incredibly useful, and Seattle FilmWorks fits the bill. You request a (snail)mailer via email, and send off your film for processing. They mail your photos back. The offer photos on disk. No big deal so far. Here's what's cool - you don't have to wait for your photos to arrive to see them - you get an email telling you that they are available for viewing on the FilmWorks site.

Even hotter - current customers can have a free home page. Current means you've sent an order in the previous 3 months. picture this - you send off your vacation film for developing, receive an email when the electronic photos are ready, download the PhotoWorks software (free), view your pictures, make up a home page, and put it online. You then email all of your friends and family members, and tell them to come see the photos and commentary. The pages are password protected, so you control who can see them. Check out the sample page - this looks like a must use service for net-connected families.

Yecch!!
Yecch!! is a parody of Yahoo!!. It has the "look and feel" of Yahoo, with some of the worst sites you can imagine. Worth a couple hours of browsing.

Note - I had trouble getting the graphics to load when going to the Yecch!! page directly, but everything loaded fine when I went through them main lampoon page. The above link is to the main page - you'll need to select "Yecch!!" from there.
