The Links for October 19, 1996
The Web Voyeur
- No cameras, but something even more frightening - look into the minds of other net-heads. This page randomly selects 20 of the real-time searches that Magellan users are currently performing on Magellan. If you have Netscape 2.0 or later, the page automatically refreshes every 20 seconds. I had to "prime the pump" by hitting the reload button once.
- Are there any surprises in the searches? Well, I found a mix. As you'd expect, you get a fair number of body parts, but I was surprised to find nowhere near the percentage the news media would have you believe.
- Oh, yes. Click on the listed subject, and you get the search results.
- This one is yet another Trevor Rieger find.
The Anonymizer
- Ever hear of cookies.txt? When web surfing, the sites you visit can learn a lot about you. Check out the snoop page to see what they can find out about you - it isn't comforting.
- The Anonymizer is a proxy - you use it to grab other web pages. It strips out all references to your email address, computer type, and previous page visited before forwarding your request. It's very simple to use, and is free (paid for by advertising.) The Anonymizer adds a navigation bar to the top of the screen.
- Want to see a sample? Here's how you would link to this very page: Just load this page: http://www.anonymizer.com:8080/http://www.solinas.com/ww/
How to Make Ben and Jerry Hairy
- Proof that your $2000 computer, a 28.8 modem, the telephone company, the Internet and several hours of Shockwave programming can all blend to simulate a $.75 kiddie game.
