KSFO's Web Wanderer

The Links for August 9, 1997

Smithsonian
The Smithsonian is on tour. Well, 200+ items are on tour, and they are in San Jose, through August 31.

This site contains excellent in formation - well worth a read before visiting the event. Information on preservation, behind the scenes information, a lecture schedule, and a great photo gallery.

The content of the site appears to be the text and pictures published in a "special insert" the San Jose Mercury News ran a little over a week ago. If you missed that issue, you should not miss this site.

Check it out!

Great autograph site
Listener Pat was out wandering the web, and found this site. She says: "I was surfing the web and came across a autograph collectors dream. A site that has listed successful and failed address. As a autograph hound i was truly amazed at the time and effort put in to this page."

I took a look. I do collect autographs on occasion - mostly authors of books I enjoy and Magicians, so I was mildly interested in this site.

Pat is right. The site is very well done. It also contains some good links for beginning collectors.

Well worth a visit. Thanks, Pat! Keep wandering the web, and keep reporting!

Quack Watch
Listener William (reluctantly) sent this in. Quackwatch is "Your Guide to Health Fraud, Quackery, and Intelligent Decisionmaking."

Williams email said "Have you ever ground your teeth over obviously questionable health and nutrition data on talk shows, the web, etc. Finally an excellent resource for factual information.

I know a bit about quackery - the study of pseudoscience has been a long-time interest of mine. I was impressed! The "General Observations" section should be require reading for everybody - it's an antidote for dealing with the barrage of questionable medical "breakthroughs" being touted in the media.

The site has an extensive list of "alternative treatments," with information you won't often see in mainstream press.

William was reluctant to share this one, he says for the same reason he is reluctant to tell people about nifty, cheap restaurants. Well, let's reward him. Email your favorite good, cheap restaurant to William, and make him happy he shared!

Do check this one out.

Items mentioned during the show

During the show, two URLs struck me as being worth a write up - the Mac newsletter, and MTU speed. Here they are. (Tom's Hardware Guide was mentioned as well, but I've mentioned this one several times already. Do a search of this site for the link).

Mac Newsletter
During the show, listener George recommended this site for the Mac Newsletter. I don't have a Mac, but if you do give this a look.

MTU SPEED
During the show, Bob mentioned a utility which will tweak your win95 registry to speed up how your modem receives and sends TCPIP packets. This should speed up your Web Wandering.
