REGCLEAN, and related links
- Taxi Mike knows many listeners have been waiting for this, so he sent it in as soon as he knew it was around. Regclean is back, and a new version is available.
- Bob has mentioned Regclean a number of times - it's a Win95 utility which could clean up your Registry. It had been unavailable for a while, and now the new version has been released. Grab a copy, fire it up, and clean up that old Registry.
- Taxi Mike also suggested I direct people to a couple of knowledge base articles posted by Brian Livingston, who works with Bob at InfoWorld. These articles are entitled "How to Troubleshoot Registry Errors", and "RegClean 4.1 Description and General Issues".
- Taxi Mike says "The new version is RegClean 4.1a (build 7364.1) and the download also unzips a file called OADIST.EXE which you only need run if you have the following problem: two messages boxes appear. One box says: "REGCLEAN.EXE is linked to missing export OLEAUT32.DLL:421", while the next message box says: "A device attached to the system is not correctly functioning".
- WARNING!!! Taxi Mike cautiously warns us all to back up our registries before using Regclean - a MUST! To do this, The question also always pops up, how do I backup my registry? On the W95 CD is a program, Cfgback.exe, that will do the job. It's located in \Other\Misc\Cfgback\.
- A very big thanks goes to Taxi Mike. He pulled together all of the above information to be sure that all of the Registry bases were covered.
Where are you Politically?
- B Weed says "So you think you know what your political affiliations is, eh trusty liberal. Right, crafty conservative? Well, you may be surprised to discover the real truth--as told by the IDEAlog. Check out this coooooooooolest java applet designed to help you find, shall we say, the right path, located at http://court.it-services.nwu.edu/idealog/ Each question you answer moves your place in the political spectrum graph
to show you just where you stand. When you are finished, the results are
tallied and a new life begins. THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE!"
- B Weed was surprised at his result. I took the test, and got pretty much the result I expected. Give it a try, and see where you stand.
- the IDEALog applet is available from the Challenge of Democracy home page, which has some other interesting information as well.
- Thanks, B Weed - this was a fun site!
Custom License Plate?
- Listener Dave, of Dave's Place, Sent in this little quickie site. If you want one of those vanity license plates, you can see if it is available here.
- Why am I not surprised that a DMV site would be so slow? I waited for my search to complete for several minutes. No go. I'll try it again later.
- Thanks, Dave.
Introduction to PC Hardware
- Ranman found a site which he says "is a real interesting site I found on PC Hardware. Pretty informative and explains in plain english some of the voodoo that is computer science."
- Now, O'Donnell on Computers is all about removing the voodoo from computing, so this site sounded like a perfect one to feature.
- This site is well worth a visit. Unless you are a veteran PC user, builder and tinkerer, you'll learn something from this site. And Ranman is correct - it is written in a very clear, easy to understand style.
- Great site, Ranman. Thanks!!
Who's Watching Who
- Nerdly, who has an excellent home page (he tells me in his .sig in every email he sends me) found this one. Its full title is "Welcome to Perilous Times - Who's Watching Who & Who's Watching YOU page".
- This site contains some GREAT links, if you are concerned about privacy. There are links for Surveillance Tricks of the Trade, censorship, big brother on the internet, information security - the list goes on.
- This site does not have much original content, but there are a TON of links on this site, and many of them appear to be worth further study. Personally, I expect to spend hours looking over the sites linked here.
- Thanks, Nerdly!!
