The Links for January 31, 1998

The Daily Outrage
Listener Les sent this site in. The Daily Outrage covers news items usually not mentioned on regular news sources.

I browsed the "Completely Outrageous Archive" and found listings by category, or chronologically. Very good reading there.

The current outrage, of course, is "CLINTON'S AMOROUS ADVENTURES!"

Well worth a visit. Thanks, Les!

The Drudge Report
Listener Dudley submitted this one, which originally ran on the April 5, 1997 show.

Back then, I was impressed by the news links - dozens of links to known columnists, newspapers, news wires, etc. Little did I know Matt Drudge would make history.

There is also a nice search engine to check recent Associated Press releases for key words.

In addition to maintaining this fine web site, Matt Drudge is an online columnist. He has some very good sources.

Last January 19, he broke the story that Newsweek was considering running a piece about Lewinsky. Do a search for "drudge" and "clinton" on the AP, and you'll see a nice timeline.

So - this one is so newsworthy, it's definitely worth another look.

Brad's Internet Help Resources -- Drivers and DLL Files
Listener Ranman sent this one in. Ranman says:

"Here is another real gold mine of information. This site is real well organized and provides information on anything from specs and jumper settings on motherboards(from the Micro House Technical Library) to PC Manufactures and SCSI adapters. It also has links to DLL's for download and of course more drivers I don't know what else to say except "Bookmark"."

I've checked the site. It contains lots of links to other pages. Not much original content, though. Still - if you're looking for a driver or other information, this site would be a great first place to go. It's well organized, and the links are kept current.

I agree with Ranman - this page is well worth a bookmark for the next time you need to find drivers or dlls. Thanks, Ranman.

Sound America
Listener Troy heard my recommendation for Wav Central last week, and needed to put in his two cents worth. He'd used Wave Central until he found SoundAmerica. Sound America has over 23,500 sounds.

The site is impressive. Thousands of sound files - all very well organized. Sounds are sorted into categories: Sound effects, cartoons, comedy, etc.

A very nice site, Troy. Thanks for sending it in!

Mr. Cranky Rates the Movies
Taxi Mike has been checking out some good sites lately, but finds he spends the most time here. Taxi Mike says:

Mr. Cranky is an intelligent and funny alternative to the usual movie reviewers. Here's what he says about one of my recent favorites, Lone Star....
"Independent director John Sayles' "Lone Star" may be the closest thing to a tolerable movie this year." but...
"...the challenge of watching "Lone Star" is to field the onslaught wrought by Sayles's "Metaphor Slugger." Get hit with it too many times and you might not survive. Duck too many times and it's hard to follow the film."

He liked this movie, by the way. Mr Cranky gave it the top rating - only one bomb - "almost tolerable." Give him a movie he doesn't like, and it can be quite brutal. He may be Cranky, but his reviews make VERY good points.

I checked out his review of Forrest Gump. In bold, I saw "Concentrate on this film and you'll quickly smell the rank odor accompanying the depoliticization of history." Strong words. The rest of the review brought up some very valid points I hadn't yet heard from the press.

One of the best features is each movie has a discussion forum, where other visitors to the site can add their comments, both pro and con.

Absolutely worth a visit. Thanks, Taxi Mike!
