KSFO's Web Wanderer

The Links for October 24, 1998

Hubble Gallery
This Hubble Telescope Gallery on the web made the news this week as a new web site. this site has photos and montages of photos from the Hubble telescope.

There's very cool background image stuff here for science / astronomy fans.

Check it out.

Fix Windows
Major contributor, listener, and frequent IRC guest Taxi Mike found "Fix Windows" in Computer Currents magazine.

The site contains troubleshooting flowcharts, drivers, how-to, shareware utilities, and tips and tricks.

There's tips on the desktop, Performance Tips, Shortcuts, Start Menu, Startup, and Windows Explorer

On the site is the ever popular information about "How to create a bootable floppy disk with CD-ROM drivers". The information is good, and they even have a little utility to make it easier.

Very useful. Check it out. Thanks, Taxi Mike!

Stalking - Search, Stalk and Surveil the Net
Listener and repeat submitter Troy found this search resource. They claim 6,000 links to search engines and data bases.

The focus is mostly Internet Search engines, but there's also a LOT of material on finding people.

This is probably the most extensive search link page I've ever seen. Bookmark this one!!!

Thanks, Troy!

Message Mates
Spudman and Sister (mine, not a nun) Anne sent me a Halloween Message Mate. If you exchange a lot of email, you've probably received a message mate - an Easter Bunny, or a Christmas Stripper.

Message Mates are short little programs you can modify with your own message. Perfect for birthdays, holidays - or whatever. And they're free. You can grab them from this site.

To see one, click HERE.

Thanks, Spudman and Anne!!

Arragon
Erin says "I listen to you on KSFO and KGO all the time so I thought I would send you our site. It is designed for working adults (in California for now) to find educational opportunities. This runs the gamut from Associates through Graduate degrees, certificates, seminars, executive programs, and private training programs."

"We have had a very successful introduction with major corporations in California but we would like to get the word out to others who may surf the net on their own. We hope you like our site and think it is good enough to mention on your Web Wanderer page! "

It's a great site. There's even a search engine which looks for nearby classes, based on zip code.

If you're considering taking any type of class, check this site out!

thanks, Erin!

The Dialectizer
Big Ed from Pleasanton found this one. Ever see the old DOS program called "jive"? It translated English into Jive. It was pretty funny.

Big Ed found one better. This site will translate text you type in or other web sites. And not just into Jive, but into several "languages" - Redneck, Jive, Cockney, Elmer Fudd, Swedish Chef, Moron, or Pig-Latin.

Makes web browsing a bit more fun.

Napa Steve's Real Quickies

Napa Steve is THE MAN when it comes to finding Real Audio and Real Video sites, his finds are now a regular feature of the Web Wanderer's Report. Every week, Napa Steve will try to find one or two hot Real sites. This week we have one from Napa Steve, and a new favorite of mine):

Book Radio
Napa Steve found this site. It's filled with Real Audio interviews of established authors.

Radio B92
Napa Steve says "This radio station from Belgrade has made a name for itself by getting the latest news out to the population of Yugoslavia and the world. By using the internet, this station has been able to counter the State run news service. In RealAudio."
