KSFO's Web Wanderer

The Links for December 5, 1998

ScotMusic
Glasgow - lives in Scotland. She listens to O'Donnell On Computers on Real Audio, and participates in chat.

There are links to web pages for pretty much every Scottish band out there. In some cases, it's the web site for the band. In others, it's a local page with clips, band history, and pictures.

There are also links for Independent labels. The "links" area holds links to other music related web sites - music festivals, recording studios, etc.

All you could ask for in information on the music scene in Scotland. Check it out.

Thanks, Glasgow!

Toons Personal Page
Listener and chat participant Wireman found this one.

Wireman met Toons in a chatroom. Toons has Cerebral Palsy, but it doesn't stop him from doing Internet chat, and creating his own web page.

Touring the site is an interesting look into his life, and his thoughts. The site has a unique FAQ - it's the questions people ask him the most often. Rather than provide real answers, you get his take on them.

Wireman tells me he is a fast typist.

Well worth a tour. Thanks, Wireman!

Knot Tying
Listener Dudley found this one.

This site will teach you how to tie some very handy knots. Each one is presented with a photo, a description of what that know is used for, and an animated graphic showing you, step by step, how to tie the knot.

Why knot tying? Many knots have specific uses - the square knot is the best way to join 2 pieces of rope, yet allows you to untie the knot easily, even after the knot has been under a lot of stress. The Trucker's Hitch is designed for tying things down. You tie the knot, pull it tight, and tie it off. Slick.

It's a clever site by a Boy Scout Troop in Billings, Montana. Quite nice.

Thanks, Dudley!

Stroud's Consummate Winsock Applications
Frequent contributor and chat room co-host Ian suggested this site.

Stroud's is a FANTASTIC resource for Internet software for Windows. It supports Win 3.x, 95, 98, and NT.

You follow the "What's Cool" link to get to the coolest, hottest applications, or browse through a TON of Internet Applications to do pretty much everything, Browsers, Net Tools, Web tools, Communication, Servers, Web Development Tools, etc.

Trust me - everything is here.

Bookmark this site. Thanks, Ian!

Bill Nye the Science Guy's Nye Labs Online
Bob the Old Fogey found this one.

The Old Fogey says "This is a fun site. There must be a lot of kid in me, as I browsed this site for over an hour just doing the experiments. The kids of our listeners should get a lot out of it as well.

Ever seen Bill Nye? Supposedly, it's science for kids. No way. I know several folks my age who think Bill Nye is GREAT. He's really entertaining and suitable for ALL ages. At the site, you can read through the episode guide, which doubles as a library of science mini-lessons; then print out the suggested experiments and recommended readings. You can watch a few clips of streaming NyeTV.

A great site, filled with fun and educational things to do with your kids.

If you know Bill Nye, I know you'll head to this site. If you haven't found him yet, DO check this out.

(Rumor has it that Bob the Old Fogey is teaching the Jail Babes a thing or two.)

Thanks, Bob, the Old Fogey!

The New South Polar Times
Paula found another good one this week.

She says: "This is an interactive site direct from the Amundsen-Scott research station at Antarctica, South Pole. Loads of great scientific, environmental and educational links, an online newsletter and much more. Click on "Other Antarctic Stations", "virtual tour" and "Choose a Satellite" for real time views of the universe. Long list of operating satellites from which to choose, plus a customizable command field for expert satellite drivers. Some of the crew members can by contacted by e-mail."

A very unique and interesting site. Thanks, Paula!
